Message Archives

Message archive-related commands are all contained in the File menu at the top of the editor. On the surface, every option is self-explanatory, though the fact that support conversations are treated separately from other messages for creation may be somewhat less obvious in origin. Let’s have a quick run-through of the File menu.

New Message Archive

New Message Archive

This option can also be triggered by the use of the key combination CTRL + N. It will allow you to create a new message archive with the specified name and first message name. Additional messages can be added through the tab context menu as noted in the GUI Introduction.

Do not use this option if you intend to create a support conversation.

New Support Conversation

New Support Conversation

This option can also be triggered by the use of the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + N. It will allow you to create a new support conversation between a pair of characters with a specified maximum rank (A or S) and type (Normal, Parent/Child, or Siblings).

This will not add the ability to have the support to the game, so you will need to do that yourself using something like thane98’s Fates Support Editor.

If you intend to create a new support conversation, ensure that you use this rather than the New Message Archive option. Support conversations have a specific prefix in their MIDs that will be added by this, but not by the regular message archive creators. WIthout the prefix, the support conversations will not load in the game.

Open

Extremely self-explanatory and triggered by CTRL + O. This will allow you to open files of any kind supported by the editor: .bin.lz, .bin, .txt. or .fescript. The “.fescript” format is just a text file with an extension that tells the editor not to change any script commands into game text commands.

You can also open files by dragging them onto the editor. If a file takes a while to open, be patient. Some of the game’s message archives have a ridiculous number of keys in them!

Save

The most useful function yet, triggered by CTRL + S. If you have already saved at least once (and have not since created or opened another archive), this will save directly to the last saved file. If you have not, it will prompt you for a location to save.

Save As

Also triggered by CTRL + SHIFT + S, this option will always prompt you for the location in which it should save. Using it will also set the target for regular saving.

Exit

Can’t get any simpler than that. Press CTRL + Q to quit.

Now we’ll look at something fun: My Units!
